Magellan RoadMate 1212 January 18, 2009 applebees (Los Angeles, CA.) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased Magellan RoadMate 1212 for a late Christmas gift for my husband. It works well for him. He is happy with this item as it makes his day at work really productive. It calculates alternative route when the traffic slows down. Pronunciation of some streets are not that accurate, but overall function is satisfactory and well worth than the price I paid for.
Does amazing things for such a low price, and VERY easy to use December 1, 2008 Spiro Apostolopoulos (Raleigh, NC USA) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm not a GPS expert (this is my first one), but from what I have read in reviews and seen at stores, the Roadmate 1212 is awesome, especially for the price ($80 at BestBuy on Black Friday). It's hard to find a GPS that speaks street names for under $200 (most in this $ range only speak the turns - I found a Garmin 260WT for $189 that did this, but that was on a super sale). Don't be fooled by the specs on the Roadmate 1200 - it does not have spoken street names, just turns. The 1212 is the least expensive model that calls out the street names. The touch screen is very responsive, menus are easy and intuitive, and the features for this price range are great (points of interest mapping, POI off of highway exits, auto-rerouting if you miss a turn, accurate routing, easy detour and rerouting during current trip plan, etc.). 3.5" is plenty big so don't be fooled into thinking you need 4.3". In fact, bigger is not better, especially if you mount on your windshield - you want to be able to view the road.
All-in-all, if you haven't had a GPS, or even if you have and you just want something relatively simple and that works, I highly recommend the Magellan Roadmate 1212. The 1212 is a great value, nice features for this price range (e.g., spoken street names), and very easy to use.
Best driving tool Ever January 7, 2009 L. Pinzow (NY, USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is he best ever. Easy to follow directions, ample warning before turns. My only complaint is when going off track by taking an exit on the highway just to get gas, it directs you via local streets to the next exit instead of back to the exit you used previously.
"Maggie" gets you there! March 7, 2009 Joe F (Concord NC) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I must say that I really had my doubts about this little wonder simply due to the low cost. With a MFR instant rebate of 30.00, it came to just 89.99 stacked up against Garmins to the left and Garmins to the right all sporting prices in the near 200.00 range and higher. It was the ONLY one in this price range with such high end features as Text To Speech, trip planner, and automatic detour.
If you think you don't really need the Text To Speech feature, think again! After using two Garmins in the past that did not have this feature, I would never be without it after trying it. You don't even have to look at the device. Instead of just generic instructions like "Turn right in .2 miles", it says something really useful like "Turn slight right in .2 miles on Hawthorne Street". That removes all doubt as to whether the right turn in .2 miles is this road, or the one right next to it at a slight angle.
The trip planner works great. My family and I took a vacation from Charlotte to Colonial Williamsburg Va, Yorktown Va and Jamestown Va. Before we left, I setup a Trip and put in every address we would need for the entire week. Whenever we were ready for the next adventure, I just pulled up that Trip, selected the pre-built address, and we were off. It even has the option to "Optimize" your trip so you can go from here, to the next closest place, to the next closest place and so on. When we got home, I just deleted the trip and all of these no longer needed addresses were gone. No muss no fuss.
We also used it to decide where to eat every day. It is loaded with Points of Interest of all kinds. I typed in "Ben" and it even found us a nice Ben & Jerry's to have an ice cream celebration before we hit the road home guided all the way by "Maggie". We came up with "Maggie" to call it(her) by. That's short for Magellan.
If I had to find one thing to complain about, it's that the screen does not seem to like it when you press the letters and numbers. Sometimes it would not do anything, or I would have to press it multiple times to get the selection to take. What I found however is that it really likes light quick taps on the numbers and letters. Once I got the hang of this, the problem completely dissapeared. The selection rate with quick taps instead of pressing against the screen took my success rate to 99.9% on the first tap. Just quick fast taps and she takes you where you want to go. Wherever you are, whenever you are ready to go home, just tap the little picture of the house and you're on your way.
This GPS would be a good deal at twice the price I think and the lowest priced Garmin I was looking at that did have the same features like text to speech was over twice the price. Sorry to repeat myself, but Text to Speech for the upcoming street names you're going to turn on is simply the bomb. I forgot to mention it has a nice little "Where am I?" feature too so if you break down or have an accident, you can tell the tow truck or police/ambulance exactly where to come.
I am very pleased with this little wonder and while the MFR instant rebate is going on, I am thinking about buying a few of them to give as Christmas presents later this year.
Well done Magellan!

I love my Magellan. it has really helped to get me from A to B. The best part is that it announces street names.....doesn't just say, 'TURN HERE IN 50 FEET'. Good product.
